about

'Heavy Digital Morning', is very important to me because it represents a time in which I found a sense of musical purpose and direction. I first heard Free Jazz in the summer of 2000 during back-to-back listening of Ornette Coleman's Science Fiction sessions and Sunny Murray's eponymous album. Listening to those albums in the sunshine on a Tuesday morning changed me and my music in so many ways. So I set about learning to improvise on my instrument.

For a few years, I preferred to collaborate with traditional instrumentalists, while I focused on computer music. I'd compose phrases as scaffolding for improvisation, and/or augment a traditional instrument's sound with real-time computer processing. Once recorded, I saw the material as samples for further offline processing, which I'd then have new musicians improvise over, and so on.

'Heavy Digital Morning', by the Nikolas Francis Unit, was originally issued on Mike Jedlicka's Optic Echo Records in 2003, but I thought the time was right to share it again, so here it is! This album really stretches out. No two pieces are similar in style or instrumentation. Enjoy!
